Digital Sign System Primer

Use this as a quick reference guide when picturing Digital Sign Systems. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call the experts at AmeriStamp Sign-A-Rama (800.223.3086).

  1. Content - This is what is displayed on the digital signs themselves. On a very simple level, think of this like a movie that is playing in a theater. What you see when sitting in that comfy seat with your feet sticking to the floor is the content.
  2. Monitors - This is the screen that the content is displayed on. It can be one or more of the following:
    • Flat screen monitor (plasma screen, LCD screen, etc.)
    • Rear projection like the 3M Vikuiti system
    • Front projection like a normal projector as in our theater example above
    • LED Message Center, these can be full color, one color, indoor or exterior.
    • Touch screen technology found in kiosks and other interactive displays
  3. Player - The player consists of 2 parts:
    • Hardware - This is the computer that stores the content and runs the player software
    • Software - This is the program that takes the content that is stored on the player hardware and sends it to the monitor(s).
  4. Content Manager - This is the software that is used to assemble each piece of content into a playlist to be used in the digital sign system and can schedule when each playlist is displayed on any particular monitor, or within different 'regions' of one monitor. There are two kinds of Content Managers:
    • Network Manager - Allows content and players (and therefore monitors) to be controlled over a network like a LAN or the Internet.
    • Composer - This is the stand alone software program used to create the playlists for the digital sign systems.
