The mission of the Evansville African American Museum is to develop a resource and cultural center to collect, preserve and educate the public on the history and traditons of African American families, organizations, and communities.
The Evansville African American Museum has a new exhibit currently running titled Trailblazers in Education. Having developed the museum displays for this exhibit, we became familiar with the stories of some of Evansville’s African American Trailblazers. Without the boldness and tenacity that these individuals showed throughout their lives, Evansville’s African American community today would be sorely lacking.

From Evansville’s first black college graduate (Zerah Priestly in 1938) to Larry Rasco recent founder of the Joshua Academy, Evansville has a rich heritage that is often overlooked. The exhibit is intended to educate Evansville and to build pride within the African American community. After reading through all of the biographies, that pride is well founded and well deserved.
